2022 Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is a fantastic variety that seems to have been relegated to a bit part in red blends. It is often used in tiny percentages to add colour, floral aromatics, tannin and acidity in Cabernet based red wines. Yet these same beneficial attributes that make it a great blend component one can argue make it a great standalone wine. We love this variety and think it is well worth exploring its potential particularly in the Yallingup sub region where the warmer weather results in ripe flavours and a more restrained acidity than is typically seen.

It is a big juicy style of wine with attractive velvety, yet slightly grippy tannins. The flavours are unmistakably of ripe fruits. Think berry compote, stewed plum, liqueur cherry and blue & black fruits. The wine has beautiful oak and acid drive that supports its long powerful palate. All the ingredients are in this wine for long term cellaring for those who have the patince.
The grapes are grown in the Yallingup sub region of Margaret River. They are harvested ripe to tame the natural acidity of this variety. Then they are crushed into small open fermenters and fermented on skins for 15 days before pressing. After a short period of settling in tank the wine is transferred to new, one and two year old barrels for aging for 12 months before assembling and bottling.
